Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was rushed and sprayed with an unknown substance by a man with a syringe on the stage during a town hall meeting Tuesday night (Jan. 27) in Minneapolis, sending shockwaves through an already tense political climate.

Video footage of the event shows the man making his way towards the lectern where Rep. Omar was speaking, spraying the unknown substance in her direction before being quickly tackled and removed by her security detail. The incident occurred just moments after Rep. Omar called for the resignation or impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

According to the Minneapolis police department, the suspect was quickly apprehended and taken into custody, where he was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault. He has not yet been formally charged.
Rep. Omar was not harmed in the incident and continued speaking to the crowd after the interruption, striking a defiant tone.
“We are Minnesota strong. We will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us,” she said.
